Top 5 Reasons Why Your Comedy Festival Submission Was Rejected
How to Fix It for Next Time
Whether you just received a rejection, you are considering applying in the future, or you're looking to improve your odds on the festival circuit, this guide is for you. The truth is, many submissions we reviewed weren’t rejected because the comic wasn’t funny—they were rejected because of technical issues, overlooked instructions, or clip-related missteps that could’ve been easily avoided. Do not let tech get in the way of your success as a comic. Content is everything, so submit YOUR BEST.
We are sharing the most common reasons submissions to the Windy City Comedy Fest were rejected or scored low, so you can avoid these mistakes and come back stronger.
1. Your Clip Was Too Short or Too Long
We asked for 5–7 minute sets, and we meant it. Submitting a 3-minute set or a 10-minute video shows you didn’t read or respect the instructions. Take the time to trim or edit your set down—tight, intentional timing is part of the craft.
2. Your Link Didn’t Work
Clips that required special access (Dropbox, Google Drive, etc.) or didn’t open at all were disqualified. We strongly recommend using a YouTube link—set it to Unlisted if you don’t want it public. Always test your link before submitting.
3. You Sent a Highlight Reel or Instagram Video
Highlight reels, “best of” edits, and Instagram Reels aren’t what we’re looking for. We need to see one continuous 5–7 minute set from a single performance to evaluate your pacing, flow, and audience engagement.
4. We Couldn’t Hear You
Even with a great room and solid material, bad audio kills a submission. We need to hear your voice and the audience’s laughter clearly. Without that, we can’t evaluate your timing or crowd response.
5. Your Clip Was Outdated
We saw sets from as far back as 2019. Your submission should reflect who you are right now as a comic, not who you were five years ago. We recommend taping a fresh set every year to stay ready.
Looking Ahead to 2026: DO BETTER!
We loved reviewing your submissions, and we want even more talented comics to join us next year. Windy City Comedy Fest 2026 submissions open November 1, 2025—so take this time to level up, tighten your tape, and bring your best work.
We’re building something great—and we hope to see you on stage next year.
